My September Book Review :)

September is a short week, and my life is packed with studies. Still, i have read a book called "Unforgettable Journeys to take before you die". It's a nice book filled with destinations all over the world, including Antartica, Costa Rica, Myanmar, etc. Each place is described so vividly you fill like going there right away. The book is also crammed with nice pictures to illustrate each journey better and give the readers a better picture of the place.

One destination in the book caught my attention, and i would love to go there. One day, I promise myself that i will go there and enjoy the sights. It is : "Driving Along Route 66, United States Of America".

Lets talk about Route 66. Dubbed "American's Main Street", it is most problably the world's most famous road. Although old, the spirit of Route 66 is still alive and kicking, it lets you get the true taste of driving and experience what it feels like to say, "
It not the destination, its the journey that counts". I could not believe that Route 66 is actually 3600km long across 8 states. Having been given its official name in 1926, and been completey paved in 1937, it has always been a favourite holiday drive for people all around the world. It even has its own song, wrote in 1946 by songwriter Bobby Troup, the legendary "Get your kicks at Route 66". A town named "Seligman" is Route 66 iconic, consisting of one overly-wide main street and a host of classic dinners, motels and general stores. It is home to Angel Delgaillo, the town's currently-retired barber. Angel revived his mother on Route 66 and founded an association to preserve the road as Historic Route 66. Driving out of Seligman, the old dusty highway begins climbing into the Black Mountains towards Oatman, another village. The narrow road twists and turnscurves and snakes its way upwards. There are several spots on the route which allow you to park and admire the view. After going through chapter, i am thrilled and want to feel how it is in the "Wild Wild West".

My Favorite Poet

After reading throught the many poems and poets, i think my favorite poet would be --------------Pablo Neruda. Pablo, whose real name is Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, was born on 12 July, 1904, in the town of Parral in Chile. His father was a railway employee and his mother, who died shortly after his birth, a teacher. Some years later his father, who had then moved to the town of Temuco, remarried doña Trinidad Candia Malverde. The poet spent his childhood and teenage years there. At Temuco, he also got to know Gabriela Mistral, head of the girls' secondary school, who took a liking to him.

At the early age of thirteen he began to contribute some articles to the daily "La Mañana". Among the articles, "Entusiasmo y Perseverancia"- his first poem. In 1920, he became a contributor to the literary journal "Selva Austral" under the pen name of Pablo Neruda.

Neruda is considered one of the finest poets of our time. A prolific and adventurous writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1971, he passed through several literary and political stages in his long career. The poetry consistently celebrates love, nature, and human experience, and was in certain periods intensely political.

Neruda's passion for writing love poetry is particularly evident in the early Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada (1924; Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair). In the poems of this collection, Neruda presents woman and nature as "two aspects of the same reality" and uses nature imagery to describe women. Although it is now among the best known of Neruda's works, Chile's leading publisher refused to publish the book, claiming that it was too blatantly erotic. Neruda's poetry of that time is extremely personal and characterized by a melancholy view of the world and a preoccupation with unrequited love.

I like Pablo mainly because he writes alot of love poems. A lot of emotions are in the love poems. Pablo writes of how he felt, and writes it very dramatically, with figurative language. I picked out two of his poems for every one to see, and perhaps other people will see his art and appreciate it like how i do.

Come with me, I said, and no one knew
where, or how my pain throbbed,
no carnations or barcaroles for me,
only a wound that love had opened.
I said it again: Come with me, as if I were dying,
and no one saw the moon that bled in my mouth
or the blood that rose into the silence.
O Love, now we can forget the star that has such thorns!
That is why when I heard your voice repeat
Come with me, it was as if you had let loose
the grief, the love, the fury of a cork-trapped wine
the geysers flooding from deep in its vault:
in my mouth I felt the taste of fire again,
of blood and carnations, of rock and scald.
Notice: Personification - Only a wound love had opened
- The moon that bled in my mouth
I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and
blood.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost.

A traveler comes to a fork in the road and needs to decide which way to go to continue his journey. After much mental debate, the traveler comes to a decision. He takes the road "less traveled by". The lines "And sorry I could not travel both" and "I shall be telling this with a sigh" suggests that the poem is somewhat gloomy and sad. Personification is used in the context, stanza 2 line 3. It says that the road "wanted wear". Sensible people know roads do not think and cannot want, hence this is figurative language. There is irony in the text too. It is ironic how the persona knows he will tell the old story "with a sigh" of a choice that "made all the difference." Lastly, I will talk about symbolism. The forked road represents choices in life. The road in this poem is a text book example of a symbol.

I like the poem because of how it talks about the choices we have to make in life. I am sure i will face similiar problems in the future when i go out to work. We have to get past these tough decisions quickly but after much consideration. We should not regret the choices, of how "grass would be greener on the other side". Rather, we should cherish the opportunities given to us and move foward. I also like the poem as it talks about this man walking in the wood in the morning. I find it relaxing and enjoyable to read.

4th book in June

The fourth book i read in June is "Breaking Dawn"by Stephenie Meyer. It is the fourth novel in the Twilight series. It maybe hard for "non-Twilight readers" to understand this review as it is a sequel. "Breaking Dawn" is the only book , of the 4 books, which is not comletely told from Isabella Swan's view. The book can be "divided" into 3 parts, 1st part and 3rd by Bella, 2nd part by Jacob. A brief summary of the book :

The first part of "Breaking Dawn" details Bella's marriage and honeymoon with Edward Cullen. They spend on a private island off the coast of Brazil. That island was an isolated island which Edward's foster father gave to his foster mother, Esme, and the island was name "Esme Island". Edward grants Bella's wish and has sex with her. Not long later, Bella finds out that she is pregnant. Her condition is progressing at an unnaturally accelerated rate. After contacting Carlisle, who confirms her pregnancy, she and Edward immediately return home to Forks. Edward, concerned for Bella's well-being, convinced Bella the fetus is a monster as it continues to develop with unnatural rapidity. He urges her to have an abortion. However, Bella wants to keep the child. She contacts Rosalie for support, knowing that Rosalie has always wanted children but could not bear any as she was a vampire.

The second part of the novel is written from Jacob's perspective. This section lasts throughout Bella's pregnancy and childbirth. The Quileute werewolf pack, not knowing what danger the unborn child may pose, make plans to destroy it, even if they have to kill Bella in the process. Jacob strongly protests this decision and leaves, forming his own pack with Leah and Seth Clearwater. Bella then gives birth, but the baby breaks her body and lots of blood is shed. In order to save her life, Edward changes her into a vampire. Jacob, who was present for the birth, "imprints" on Edward and Bella's newborn daughter, Renesmee. The name came about by combined Bella's "two mothers", Esme and Rene.

The third section of Breaking Dawn changes back to Bella's point of view, finding her changed into a vampire and enjoying her new life and abilities. One day, she, Jacob and Renesmee went out to hunt. A vampire Irina misidentifies Renesmee as an "immortal child". Because "immortal children" are percieved as uncontrollable, creating them has been outlawed by the Volturi. After Irina presents her allegation to the Volturi, they plan to destroy Renesmee and the Cullens. In an attempt to save her, the Cullens gather vampires from around the world to stand as witnesses and prove to the Volturi that Renesmee is not an immortal child. Upon confronting the gathered Cullen allies and witnesses, the Volturi discover that they have been misinformed and immediately execute Irina for her mistake. However, they remain undecided on whether Renesmee should be viewed as a threat to vampires' secret existence. At that time, Alice and Jasper, who had left, return with Nahuel, a 150-year-old vampire-human crossbreed like Renesmee. He shows that crossbreeds pose no threat, and the Volturi leave. Bella, Edward and Renesmee return to their home in peace.

I am one of the millions who enjoy reading this book and do wait to read the next "Twilight series".

#rd Book In June

The third book i read in June is "Broken Soup" by Jenny Valentine. The story is about the main character, Rowan, and his life in a dysfunctional family. His family was a huge mess, like spills from a dropped breakfast tray, which Rowan's 6-year-old sister nicknamed "Broken Soup". Rowan's parents' marriage failed, and the fater had left. Rowan has taken over all domestic responsibilities, including the care of her sister, but hides the truth for fear of being taken from her incapably depressed mother.

The writing moves with an athletic spring. When you think there's going to be one startling simile too many, she swerves away. Psychobabble looms, but is avoided. On the rare occasions where Valentine lapses into cliché, it simply highlights the tense originality of the rest of the text. And just when it seems that we are heading for a disappointingly ending, there's a new twist. On no account should you skip ahead.

For a book about grief, depression and divorce it is most enjoyable: a witty, romantic read, about freedom and responsibility. For all the tears you may shed on the way, Broken Soup is a joy to read.

@nd book in June

Good evening,

This 2nd book i read is called "Making friends" by Andrew Matthews. Every week, my teacher told me i needed to read and book. Its the 2nd week, its the 2nd book! Making friends is another book i chose and bought from Kinokuniya. A good book for a person with problems socially.

One part of the book caught my attention. The topic was on "Judging People". Most people see an ideal friendship as "acceptance" and "non-judgement"....." He never judges me",......"she accepts me as i am...." This is kinda true, I feel. When we cease to constantly judge others, we find greater peace of mind. It is very often in our daily lives, we hear people criticising how their friends live. "She is far too fat to wear that frilly dress!" "He should know better than to spend all his money on video games!" When we make these type of judgements, we sabotage our own peace of mind - we let ourselves be disturbed that things are not as they "should be" or "should have been". Great joy comes from accepting others the way they are. Peace of mind comes from a change in attitude, not circumstances.

What what you prefer as a gift - a card, or a car? Many would choose the car. Another example, Fred gives his wife roses for her birthday and she is mad. She says :"You give me pathetic flowers? That watch i bought you on your birthday cost me a ton!" Here, Fred's wife see a present as an exchange for what she gave Fred. Is giving equivalant to exchanging? When you give, YOU GIVE! Giving makes someone feel grateful, not guilty. In a nutshell, Giving without conditions may sound like "spiritual advice". Actually, it is very practical, and it can eliminate alot of resentment.

This book had nice pictures, good content and a good sum up. A book to be picked up, off the book shelves and read.

First Book i read in JUNE

This entry is about a book i read in the June holidays. The title is "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be. " It is a very nice and motivational book. Its a 5 out of 5 review for me.

This book not only gives you confidence but also gives you the ability to believe you can do things you could never imagine even thinking about before. The quote is "You can achieve the unachieveable". Firstly, you have to aim beyond what you are capable of. You have to develop a complete disregard for where your abilities end. You should try to do things you are incapable of. If you think you cannot run your own business, make that your aim. Make your vision reality. Nothing is impossible.

This book motivates you to move onwards, not dwell on the negative, like getting fired. "Getting fired can be a positive career move." Being fired often means that you are at odds with your company. It doesn't mean you are incapable. It simply means the job isn't right for you. Now, for the records, getting fired is a positive on someone's resume as it shows initiative.

This book also has some humour in it. "Playing your cards right." I never knew your business card could make a difference. On the card, instead of saying what i am, i can be more ambitious. I put down what i want others to percieve me. How i percieve myself is how others see me.

I think the books main strength is the positive thinking it instills into you, which I feel was the biggest barrier for me before-hand. I didn't believe in myself, but since reading this book that has changed. I know believe the only way for me is forward and I look forward to hitting all my future challenges head on.

VBTS review

Hi there,

This post is about the book, VBTS. It is a book i am required to read for my LITERATURE subject. It is a nice short story about a boy named Hari. His father is drunk and his mother is sick. He had to leave school early to support his family. He has three sisters, Bela, Kamal and Lila. Lila assumes the role of her mother as the mother
is too sick.

This book talks a lot about India culture and rural living. I never thought that people in India would be so less fortunate. Now i know that i should appreciate the things around me.

One theme i am going to explore is : FAMILY. Family, everyone has one. NO matter how dysfunctional it is, it is still a family.Their family is considered dysfunctional. Their father is a major factor. Instead of contributing, he drinks toddy everyday, even when he does not have money. 'He no longer fished, he had sold his boat to pay his debts' (pg 3).

Hari hated his father. 'Maybe a poisonous snake will bite him. He may step on one of them and be bitten' (pg 33). He hoped that his father would die, not be afraid that would happen.

Lila looked after the family, taking the role of her mother. She makes tea, buys all the nessecities and cooks the 3 meals, if they could afford. Lila stopped school to assume this role as mother, taking care of her family. She often reminds her sisters to be punctual for school. I can infer that she thinks highly of education and does not want her sisters to miss this opportunity to study.

Even though Hari is not much older than his siblings, they still look up to him as the head of the family. When the Khanekar brothers came to their house, and asked them to pay off the father's debts, the girls wished that Hari was around. Hari takes it upon himself to take care of the family. He trys his best to earn money. He thinks that 'He must have a job if he was to find his sisters a way out of this dark, gloomy house and the illness and drunkenness and hopelessness that surrounded them like the shadows of the night'. (page 67)

Organ Trading , a big "No No"

Yooo people,

Its been a long time since i posted something and i apologise for that.Today's topic is on Organ Trading.

I think that Singapore should NOT legalise organ trading. Organ trading only favours the rich. Poor people do not realise that selling their organ for money only solves the short term problems. If they get the same disease and had already sold their organ, how can they help themselves? Do they just suffer and die? If that is so, I will say the government has done nothing to develop the citizens.

Well, according the the papers, the government has came up with some solutions or new measures. The government would increase the age limit on cadaveric (deceased people) donors , so there will be an increased number of organs. Obviously, these organs are in tip-top condition. Recipients are at more ease finding a better match. This allows a lower risk of having implications.

The debate over these two words "Organ Trading" is endless, many things to consider. Legallise or not? "Organ Trading" is a very broad topic and it is hard for the government to make a decision. However, i am sure they are trying their hardest to resolve this issue.

Jay

Experience.....

Hey there bloggers,

Blogging gives us a chance to write and improve our usage of english. I personally find blogging fun and interesting as I get to tell people about my daily life. People can also comment on my posts and this will "imitate" a conversation.

Well I love my blog because of a few reasons. Firstly, I can express myself through writing. Secondly, it is a form of relaxation. It helps to process and relax the mind through simple writing. Blogs can be about anything. Sky is the limit. Blogging is also my schoolwork. Instead of writing on paper(I find this very time consuming aand utterly boring), this takes place on a computer which makes it more interesting. It is also environmentally friendly. Save trees!

A fact : This blog is not perfect. I love to see critism and complients based on your interpretation of the post. I think that blogging can be improved by making the comment section appear automatically. That way, it is more convinient for readers to comment.

In a nutshell, blogging is fun!

What do you prefer?

Hi there fellow bloggers,

Every student has to study the subject Literature when they are in Secondary 1 . At that point of time, they are asked to read novels and so on. There are two types of novels. A Normal Novel and a Graphic Novel.

Normal novels is a dread to many students. Normal novels are bulky and are filled wth very small words, thus making it even less appealing to the "book-haters". Normal novels most of the time contain no pictures. The words of a "book-hater" : 'So long! So boring! Aiyah, I don't want to read it anymore.'

Graphic Novels is more popular with students. A lower standard of interpretation is needed. With a lot of pictures and little words, it is able to attract the attention of student for a long time. Who gets bored reading them? I do.

Both novels are created because the author wants to convey a message. Normal novels convey the message through words. Lots and lots of them. Some of these words might be complicated and it is up to the reader to unscramble them to know the definition. This is a reason why people like graphic novels. They do not like to think! Graphic novels use pictures to express meanings. They are often action packed and may be hilarious.

Personally, the winner is : Novels! They are more detailed and help me to improve my standard of english. Literature will be easy in no time!

Yours Sincerely,
Jay

My Reading Habit

Hi there fellow bloggers,

"Reading is life". You might have heard this from your parents in your adolescence. Most students think that reading is very boring. They are wrong.

I must abmit that I used to think books are stupid. I hardly touched books. My parents often "nagged" me to read. I simply did not like reading and refused. One of the reasons was because i did not want to be stereotyped as a bookworm.

As time goes by, we become mature and think more like a young adult. Books are like a collection of knowledge. The first time I became interested in books was when I was in Primary 6. I was reading a book which I was being rewarded with for doing well in school, primary school(I still remembered i wan disappointed). This book was so good that I felt as if I was in it, in another dimension.

Since then, I loved books . Any book. But as time goes by I became very picky. Books that managed to catch my attention had to pass many elimination rounds. To find a good book, i usually asked for a reconmendation by a teacher or the librarian. I also read the newspapers but as usual, I only pick interesting ones. Mostly from their title.

Well, there's the story of how i started reading.

Why Did I Do It?

Hi there bloggers,

Now i am going to write about "Nothing But The Truth" fron the view Point of Philip Malloy.Let me know what you think.

"Why did i do this? This school has nothing i need! No track team! Does this mean i give up my dreams of being the next Steve Hallick? I do not think so. This is such a big mistake. I do not like kicking a ball, i like running! Why did i do this? This is worse than having my old classmates make fun of me. I guess i have to move on. What else can i do? Why did i choose this path? Why did i do it??"

That was my interpretation of the last few pages of the book.I hope you liked it.

Yours Sincerely,
Jay
